Ductless mini-split systems (aka mini split heat pumps) contain two main parts:

An indoor air-handling unit and an outdoor compressor/condenser. 

You can have a single indoor system or a multi-zone system connected to the same outdoor unit (up to 8 on some brands). Each indoor unit is independently controlled, allowing you to adjust the temperature with the touch of a button.

Ductless, mini-split-system heat pumps (mini-splits) make good retrofit add-ons to houses with "non-ducted" heating systems, such as hydronic (hot water heat), radiant panels, and space heaters. They can also be a good choice for room additions where extending or installing distribution ductwork is not feasible, and for very efficient new homes that require only a small space conditioning system.
